Is the Oppo Reno 8 actually the OnePlus 10?

4 min read

Various leaks and rumours have begun to appear about the expected Oppo Reno 8, which may launch later this year. Interestingly, it looks like it could occupy the space left by the un-released OnePlus 10, with a rather familiar looking design.

Here’s all we know so far about the device.

When will the Oppo Reno 8 be released?

There’s no official release date for the Oppo Reno 8 at the time of writing, in fact the company has yet to even say whether the leaks we’ve seen are of a real device. We do have the previous generation to use as a guide though.

Oppo announced the Reno 7 range in November 2021, with the devices going on sale in China on 3 December 2021, followed by India in February. There’s been no sightings of it in the West as yet, with the Oppo Reno 6 only appearing in September 2021, and then only in select markets.

If Oppo keeps this schedule, then expect the Reno 8 to launch in November 2022, although those in Europe may not see it until much later.

How much will the Oppo Reno 8 cost?

Obviously, as we don’t have any confirmation on the device’s existence, there’s no official pricing available. Again we look back to the previous incarnation for some clues. Here’s how they lined up:

  • Reno 7 8GB/128GB – ¥2,699 (approx. £318/€374/$424)
  • Reno 7 8GB/256GB – ¥2,999 (approx. £353/€415/$470)
  • Reno 7 12GB/256GB – ¥3,299 (approx. £388/€457/$518)

Many of the rumours we’ve seen (and which you can read below) suggest that the Oppo Reno 8 could be the OnePlus 10 model that didn’t appear this year alongside the OnePlus 10 Pro. With that in mind, here are the prices for the OnePlus 9:

  • OnePlus 9 8/128GB – £629/$729/€699
  • OnePlus 9 12/256GB – £729/€799

There’s a bit of a difference in the price tiering between the OnePlus and the Reno 7, so our best estimate would be that the Reno 8 could sit somewhere between the two or veer closer to the more expensive OnePlus.

What specs and features will we see in the Oppo Reno 8?

There have been a few different rumours appearing on tech sites and social media feeds that show a potential device that looks a lot like the one people thought would be the OnePlus 10. This isn’t a far-fetched as it may sound, as Oppo and OnePlus are sister companies that have now merged their R&D departments to share resources. This has led to devices being released by one brand that look remarkably similar to those of the other.

With OnePlus strangely omitting a standard 10 model this year, going only with the 10 Pro and a rumoured OnePlus 10 Ultra on the way, it leaves open the possibility that Oppo might be the one to supply that particular area of the market.

This is certainly the way things are starting to appear, with Chinese tech tipster Digital Chat Station posting on Weibo an image of the device, plus some of the components it may contain.

As you can see, the reported Reno 8 looks remarkably similar to the OnePlus 10 Pro, so if the render is accurate then it certainly suggests that Oppo has picked up where OnePlus left off.

Oppo Reno 8 Everything you need to know: OnePlus 10 Pro

The post states that the Reno 8 will feature a 6.55in FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate (just like the OnePlus 9), with a 50Mp IMX766 sensor in the main camera. The image of the Oppo doesn’t show any Hasselblad branding on the camera section, as there is on the OnePlus 10 Pro, but this is consistent with the cheaper models. Aside from this, there are no other details available.

With the OnePlus 9 sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, we think it’s more than likely that the Oppo Reno 8 will move up to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is the mainstay of most premium Android devices in 2022. Other than that, we’re not sure how much the new device will vary from what we saw with the OnePlus 9.

As an indicator of the kind of spec sheet you might see, here’s the one for the OnePlus. Of course, there are bound to be various upgrades, but this should at least provide the base level of components to expect.
