By order of the Peaky Blinders, Season 6 is not the end, no, because the Birmingham gangsters will return for one last hurrah on the big screen.
Showrunner Steven Knight first announced he had plans to make a film to round off the story of the Shelby family in January 2021, when he announced the show would end with its sixth season but would “continue in another form.”
The other form, Knight clarified later, would be a movie, which he has spoken about ahead of the Season 6 finale airing on BBC in the U.K. on Sunday, April 3.
Here is everything we know so far about the film.
What Will the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie Be About?
A specific plot has not been revealed for the Peaky Blinders movie yet, and no doubt this is because whatever happens in the show’s Season 6 finale will impact what takes place in the film.
Knight has spoken to multiple publications about the film and has shared that it will be based in and around the Second World War, which makes sense given Tommy Shelby’s (Cillian Murphy) association with Oswald Mosely (Sam Claflin) and the show’s focus on the rise of Nazi power in the period.
In an interview with Radio Times‘ website, Knight teased: “I know what’s going to happen in those stories and it’s about a sort of untold story that happened in the Second World War, which Peakys are going to be involved in.”
The showrunner added in an interview with Empire magazine in January 2022 that the story would “go into and beyond the Second World War” and he added: “I think of this sixth series [season] as the end of the beginning.”
He also said that he didn’t know what would happen specifically in the story and he only would when he started writing the script.
When Will the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie Be Released?
In his aforementioned interview with Radio Times in February 2022, Knight shared that he had started working on the script: “I’m writing at the moment. In terms of the cast, the nature of the story offers up all sorts of possibilities for some incredible cast.”
Variety reported in October 2021 that production would begin on the film in 2023, but this date may well change given the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Knight said at a panel at the British Film Institute (BFI) London Film Festival, per Variety, that the film would likely be “the end of the road for ‘Peaky Blinders’ as we know it,” though he did not elaborate on how.
Who Will Star in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie?
As previously mentioned, because the Season 6 finale has yet to air it is currently unclear who could potentially appear in a Peaky Blinders movie.
The final episode may well end with an unexpected character death, or deaths, like it has done in previous seasons, so there is no way to speculate who could be in the film.
There has not been an official announcement on who will star in the cast for the Peaky Blinders movie.
However, Knight has shared that Polly, played by the late Helen McCrory, would “absolutely” be a key part of the story.
In an interview with Radio Times magazine on Monday, March 28, Knight shared: “The death of the human being is the tragedy. The death of the character is something you can deal with, and hopefully we dealt with it in a suitable way.
“Helen was so brilliant. When anything happened in the rest of the series, I wanted people to think, ‘What would Polly say?’ It’s like a family when someone passes away, their opinion remains in the house. Polly’s opinion is going to last.”
He added: “She’s such a fundamental part of what Peaky is; her presence rules.”
Peaky Blinders Season 6 ends on BBC in the UK on Sunday, April 3, and it will be released on Netflix in the U.S. on Friday June 10.
