Boxing commentator brands ring girls “bimbos” during live broadcast

3 min read

Boxing commentator Bob Sheridan has branded ring girls “bimbos” while live on air during a broadcast.

The main card consisted of four fights and took place in Cuidad Guzman in the Mexican state of Jalisco on April 1. The card was headlined by Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez who defeated Adrian Pacheco at super-featherweight, with Alberto Mora and Hector Flores also picking up victories on the card.

Sheridan made a number of controversial remarks on commentary including branding the ring girls “bimbos” as they waited in the ring ahead of the fight. He said during the broadcast: “Alright, we like the bimbos. Is that politically correct to say bimbo? Sorry ladies, you two fine young ladies.

“God bless you; sorry for the insult, but I come from the old days when you can actually say some things are funny. No-one would get their red neck up when you say stuff like that in those days. I wish you’d been there Paulie.”

Sheridan was addressing his co-commentator Paulie Malignaggi who previously held world titles in two weight classes. Malignaggi quickly responded by changing the subject: “No, We’re waiting for the official decision here, I don’t think anyone watching really cared about the decision, think they enjoyed the contest.”

Nunez scored the victory in the main event of the night during a high-action contest by continuing his 100 per cent knockout ratio with his 23rd stoppage coming in the tenth round. Pacheco was a dangerous customer on the night handing Nunez problems from the offset but was eventually broken down by the relentless aggression of his Mexican rival.

He found his precision later on in the fight and found his moment in the tenth period, after a barrage of shots left his rival defenceless and gave the referee no decision but to step in and halt the clash.

Sheridan made a series of controversial remarks on the night including telling a story of a fight he had in Boston after hitting a man “with a car”. “I had a fight in Boston one day and I got a black eye,” Sheridan said in between rounds of an undercard bout in Mexico. “I hit a guy with my car and his wife comes around and throws her purse at me. I didn’t even think I turned around and knocked her out.

“I’m not proud of that I knocked out her teeth, I have since been reborn and a born-again Christian and have an office in the Vatican.”

His other remarks included giving a detailed opinion on Ukraine’s defence against Russian invasion in recent weeks. Sheridan has worked in broadcasting boxing and MMA for many years and has called fights including Muhammad Ali’s Rumble in the Jungle, Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. He has been part of the broadcast for over 10,000 fights and has been inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.
